February 17th- later that day
After a few back breaking hours of making rows (and lunch) we finally get to start planting! We chose to start with our Onion plants first since it is still mid-February and we don't want any freezes to kill them. Its a good rule of thumb to plant onions and potatoes by around Valentines day.
We used the end of a rake pole to poke holes in the hills about every 5-6 inches for the onions. Once they start getting quite a bit bigger, we'll thin out the weaker looking plants so the better ones can grow larger.
Here you can see the spacing on the holes we poked.
Using the wooden pole, it made the perfect sized hole for the little onion plants. So it went very quickly to place one in the hole and tamp the dirt around in around it to hold it up and go on to the next one.
This was so much fun, even our 6 yr. old daughter wanted to get involved! Its great to start them young.
OK so maybe we need more practice! Turn the onion over and plant the roots first.....
Then pack the soil around the little guy like this....
I think she's got it!
It soon becomes a family affair! Our 14 yr.old son joined us!
Got the assembly line work going now! Poke hole.. drop onion... pack dirt. Super quick and easy with teamwork! We had 2 rows of onions done in no time!
